A visit to Porvenir, part of tierra del fuego and King Penguin park.

Its capital, Porvenir, was created in 1883 during the gold fever and then founded in 1894.
In the middle of a patagonic ecosystem, surrounded by great attributes that are part of the Tierra del Fuego island, we find the King Penguin, the second largest penguin on the world. The island of Tierra del Fuego is one of the few places in the world where you can watch this species in its natural habitat. In this tour, with our local guides, you will be able to get to know more of the story of this beautiful specie.
Our trip starts at 9.00 am (the passenger pick up starts at 7.30 am to be able to be on time for the ferry at 8.30). From Punta Arenas we take a ferry at Tres Puentes terminal towards Bahia Chilota in the Porvenir Commune. This trip takes 2 hours, and you will be able to watch game which is related to the Magellan’s strait such as albatrosses and giant petrels. If conditions are favorable you will be able to see Peale’s dolphins and Commerson’s dolphins, one of the smallest dolphin species in the world, fast and attractive swimmers which from time to time, like to jump in front of the ferry entertaining the passengers.
Arriving to Porvernir, before heading towards the penguins, we will visit the provincial museum Fernando Cordero Rusque that exhibits the colonization process in Tierra del Fuego. Outstands the archaeological and anthropological parts, specially the momified body of an old inhabitant of the island. The museum also counts with expositions related to the finding and exploitation of gold on the rivers Sierra Boquerón in 1881, also the beginnings of chilean cinema with films about Porvenir before 1910; an interesting photography exhibition and a natural history section.
After having a time for lunch and get around the city, around 14.30 we start our trip towards the King Penguin Park (trip of 1 1/2 hour). At 16.00 we arrive to the park to start the watching of this bird. At 18.00 hrs we head towards the Bahia Azul crossing to go back to the continent. If we have time and our clients wish it, we can also stop in Cerro Sombrero, an old oil city in the middle of the Tierra del Fuego pampa. We can also stop at the San Gregorio stance, that once was equipped with all the commodities but stopped operations in 1932, moment in which was abandoned.
Around 22.00 hrs we finish the tour and leave our passengers at their places.
